The #1 rule of temping is you're not supposed to ask for jobs or try to get employment on your own to honor the relationship and introduction your agent forged with the company you're at. Straight out of college, I joined the temp pool while I was job hunting.

If appropriate and true, during the interview process, you can mention you take the time to have lunch with other assistants, interns, or other co-workers just to understand them better as people, the office environment, and pick their brain for advice. I mention how I worked for all my CEOs because I was recruited away as a temp.

The shortest route is to look for temp work thru agencies or TaskRabbit, Craiglist, or volunteer. Be honest you understand the paycut and why it doesn't bother you at the appropriate time in the interview process. Your best bet is to get some experience in admin and being an EA thru temping or other contract work.

The staffing agent asked if I was open to temp to perm, even though the position was for a full time EA, he feels the CEO may need time to see if it is a good fit. I have no idea how long "temp" is considered before they would offer the permanent position. It feels like a bait and switch and there are no guarantees.
