In Homer’s ancient story The Odyssey , the goddess Athena, disguised as old man Mentor, reveals to the hero’s son the right path to take. Skip forward several millennia and across the Atlantic to an urban high school preparing teens for life after graduation, and the image of mentor-as-lone-sage doesn’t quite paint the picture.
Kids develop planning skills. As such, this mindset builds resilience and soft skills essential to leadership. Kids will develop hard skills. Explore local newspapers, magazines, online publications, and blogs that cover topics related to coworking, entrepreneurship, and workplace trends. Consider their professional backgrounds, industries, and the type of knowledge or skills they seek. Pay attention to their readership and online presence.
You might also look for courses that will develop some new administrative and entrepreneurial skills that will expand your contributions to your company and can possibly save them from having to hire another employee to do that work. If you’re not happy with your options, it may be helpful to talk to a trusted advisor or mentor, or engage with a career coach to help you prepare for your next step.
