It began several years ago when I started working for Mr. H as a temp. Our role is no longer confined to typing letters, answering the phone, scheduling meetings and travel. Creative Event Planners. Expert Travel Agents. I’d like to share my journey of discovery with you. I told him, “I’ve never done this before.

He heads to Tempe in the morning for physical and workout. Contract and rookie league explained.
We hired a temp to do some simple clerical work for us, but realized once she left, that the work was inadequate and there were spelling mistakes along with the mail merge list not being correct, that we supplied to her. Heres an example of what happened with me.
I work at a travel and event planning agency. We are a great resource for Executive Assistants (we have several that we work with currently) booking high level travel globally but I am having trouble reaching out to the right people. Most large companies have in house travel department or a pre-approved vendor and agency list.
The reality of being an EA is that while the phones, calendar, and travel are essentially the same in every office your boss and your team are always unique people with their own work styles and needs. I mention how I worked for all my CEOs because I was recruited away as a temp. Exhaust all resources.
The company will ask that you charge everything from business travel to catered lunches on your credit card and they will reimburse you. You’d think that if you had a credit card, you’d be safe, but I once had to get a cashier’s check for almost $400 for a work event. Have cash in your bank account.
As you are job hunting, think hard about if you want to temp, freelance, do contract work, temp-to-hire, or direct hire roles only and under which circumstance. And because executives are constantly traveling for weeks at a time, it may take a month or three just to finally meet everyone. Job hunt with focus. Everyone is busy.
The point of the above exercise is to figure out if the solution is something that can be fixed with a little action/daily maintenance (go on vacation, take better care of yourself, respectively) or will take long term planning and goals/strategy (move closer to family or save enough money to travel for a year).
You answer the phone, book travel, offer beverages to guests, book meetings, prepare the conference room, order food, etc. In the event of an emergency or when family visits, it would be great for you to already know who the family members are. If you are out sick, a temp will have to sub for you. Do they know the vm passwords?
I'm pushed pretty far in terms of capacity on most days - one extra board meeting or event can result in a spiral of 60 hour weeks. EA work is typically admin work - phones, travels, calendars, expense reports, mtgs/luncheons, etc. Would hate to pass up this leadership opportunity if it could mean progression for me in the future.
LYT (pronounced “light”), a California-based traffic tech company, has been revolutionizing the way first responders travel to emergency scenes. So far, LYT’s services have been enlisted by cities including Seattle; Boston; Toronto; Portland, Oregon; Tempe, Arizona; and several others across the U.S. Good news: It’s already happening.
For most administrative professionals, the majority of our roles contain functions that recur, such as calendar management, expense reporting and travel arrangements. Event planning could also figure into that category. General, but true and perhaps better than just saying that I helped lead a customer-facing event, period.
We also get a mini break when our boss is traveling as the stress level is generally lower and we can catch up on our workload. Other jobs, because they were temp to full time, I didn’t even have the benefits of paid vacation time or paid sick days for almost a year. During the interview process ask about the company culture.
But a new travel trend, noctourism, short for nocturnal tourism, offers the complete opposite experience: pursuing nighttime adventures, recreational experiences and stellar events that celebrate nature after dark. Globally rising temps are another factor causing people to make travel plans that occur at night.
Tell us your story on how you went from temping in LA to being the EA of high-profile CEOs. I found every single one of my jobs through a temping agency or by referral. I learned through informational interviews that I should apply to temp agencies. So I left that temp gig and went to work for the CEO.
