As usual, we have a packed schedule for 2017, starting with the Assist Conference in February. Today I am writing about one of the key themes for this year’s conference – using your tool kits to add value within your organisation. Assistants are natural problem solvers, most of us will have this skill in our toolkit.
Today I am going to start a new one – Core Skills. I’m not just going to write about which skills we need I am also going to look at how these skills are linked to the role specifically. At the Assist Conference last year we had a session on personal branding and the speaker asked each of us ‘what are you good at?’

When I started looking at the programme I thought to myself, I really want to put a conference together that truly inspires and empowers assistants. I attended the Assist Conference earlier this year. A lot of Job Specs tend to focus on a standard set of skills rather than the actual responsibilities. It is imperative to be proactive about self-promotion in order to showcase your skills, achievements and personal brand. The role has changed and so must we.
There were many free training sessions for assistants to attend and the exhibitors were all relevant suppliers to the industry which again is not always the case with these types of events! Many companies do not pay for their assistants to receive training and they don’t encourage assistants to keep their skills up to date.
The venue has been confirmed and we have some brilliant suppliers attending the exhibition. . Our Executives travel far and wide, they are often away from home for long stretches of time and have to rely on our organisational skills to get them from A to B.
