Creating a strong professional portfolio is essential for showcasing your skills, experiences, and unique attributes as an administrativeprofessional. There are a lot of elements that can be included in a professional portfolio. I always encourage admins to start with what they have available.
Administrativeprofessionals come at procedures from many different knowledge levels. Example: An employee handbook that includes a procedure for submitting expense reports, outlining the steps to fill out the form, attach receipts, and submit it to the finance department.
As administrativeprofessionals, managing large amounts of information efficiently is crucial for ensuring smooth operations. Administrativeprofessionals handle a lot of information each day, so it’s crucial to find the best ways to manage and organize it. Think about the main types of documents you create.
For example, let’s say you spend three hours each week assembling the weekly sales reports in Excel to present at the Monday morning team meeting. If you take a couple Excel classes, learn how to streamline the report assembly process, and save yourself at least an hour per week, that’s 50+ hours over the course of the year.
Or you may have set days of the week where you do certain reports or perform routine tasks like expense reporting or payroll. Report how many procedures you started to your accountability partner or your manager at the end of each week. Continue working on it throughout the day or week when you do that task.

If a more experienced assistant comes alongside you and provides mentoring - dont refuse it. So if you want to get your foot in the door as an admin, there is no shame in that and it will be valuable training for whatever career you ultimately choose.
