For years, we’ve been told the reason the gender pay gap exists is that women don’t negotiate or advocate for themselves. This narrative has been a constant hum over the course of my career, which is odd considering nearly every raise and promotion I’ve ever received has come as a result of my own asking.

If inexperience is holding you back, approach someone whose work you admire and ask him/her to mentor you. I also haven’t been growing or learning anything new since Day 1 because my boss won’t give me projects. I would like to get better assignments, promoted, or get a raise before a few more years go by. It’s such a shame that there aren’t more managers who are good mentors that help each individual grow and learn more in their roles.
