Live Life to Its Fullest: 39 Ways to Live and Not Merely Exist

Dumb Little Man

“The proper function of man is to live – not to exist.” ” – Jack London. Too often we go through life on autopilot, going through the motions and having each day pass like the one before it. That’s fine and comfortable but not until you have gone through another year without having done anything or having really lived life. Or when you have reached old age and looked back on life with regrets. Honestly, none of that is fine.

Chiasmus: When Words Mirror Each Other in a Sentence

Office Dynamics

Using figures of speech in our business writing makes it fun for us and entertaining for our readers. Truly my favorite figure of speech is the chiasmus (ky-AZ-mus). That’s when words in a sentence mirror each other. Politicians have made them famous (e.g., Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. John F. Kennedy). Experts have made them accessible and even popular (e.g.,

3 Ways to Handle Nosy Co-Workers

On The Job

Believe it or not, some people don't like to talk about their personal life. I know, I know, this seems bizarre in a time when people post photos of themselves sitting on the toilet or reveal every detail of giving birth. In the workplace we often form friendships -- some of them very close -- and as a result we share details of our lives. The woman in the next cubicle, for example, knows that your teenager is getting into trouble and your husband lost his job last week.

9 Immediate Tips To Stay Focused on Your Goals

Dumb Little Man

Honestly, do you still remember the new year’s resolutions you set at the beginning of this year? How are you faring in them right now? If you’re like most people, chances are you’ve long abandoned those goals. Some of you may not even recall the goals you have set and that’s really unfortunate. Goal setting works and it has never failed anyone. The only reason why goals would stop working is because the person who has set them chose to give up on them mid-way.

Switching To Deliberate Living

Simple Productivity Blog

Someone asked me recently why I have made this switch to deliberate living. He said it seemed like over-thinking and too much structure; why not just go with the flow? It’s been brought home to me that none of us live forever and we have limited time on this earth. I don’t want to look back at my life and realize I accomplished nothing because I frittered away my time on social media or pointless tasks or projects that were thrust upon me by others.

Do You Need Fast Internet? The Answer May Surprise You

Eco-Office Gals

When it comes to speed, internet users are divided into 3 major camps: people who think they need the fastest internet, people who don’t think they need much internet speed, and people who have no idea what they need. People who know how to measure internet speeds and performance will have multiple tools available and experience to rely on, but what if you’re just trying to make the right purchase without any formal training?

If Your Goals Don’t Scare You, You’re Setting Them Wrong

Dumb Little Man

“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” – Michelangelo. When I was six years old, my alcoholic mother forced me to drink saltwater, then laughed in my face as I vomited into the sink. By the time I was 20, I was in an abusive relationship with a man. I had anorexia and had been depressed for 13 years. Now, I’m 30 and I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics.

Gig Workers and Economic Anxiety

Small Business Labs

Marketplace and Edison research recently released Americans and the Gig Economy, a survey of gig workers.    The survey covered a lot of ground, including finding about 24% of American 18 and older are gig workers. This works out to a bit more than 60 million.    The survey also asked a series of questions about economic anxiety. They found gig workers, on average, experience more economic anxiety than those with traditional jobs.

Deliberate Task Management: Responsibility

Simple Productivity Blog

One of the things about living a more deliberate life is that it means I have to take full responsibility for my decisions. It has been brought home to me that what I do is a choice, which requires a decision, and this has led me to consider more of what I am doing - and not doing - at any time. I see too many instances of blame and excuses every day. What do blame and excuses do to help me live a more deliberate and productive life? Nothing.

Deliberate Social Media

Simple Productivity Blog

Many people that I talk with are surprised to know that outside of the blog, I don’t use Facebook or Twitter. Some react with disdain (“How can you possibly know what’s going on?”) or frustration (“How can I reach you if you don’t read Facebook?”). It’s a deliberate choice, and the result of a long journey. I’ve had a rough journey in popular culture over the past few years. First I decided not to read/watch/listen to news.

Bouncing Back from Failure

Office Dynamics

Has it been another week of adventure? A lot can happen between Monday and Friday, can’t it? I’d like to focus today on Turning Failure into Success. Failure is a dirty word in the corporate world. And our success-oriented society often makes it difficult for those who fail to adjust. This negative attitude often forces people to take job-related failures personally, even if they had little to do with the actual events.

4 Unexpected Ways Playing Board Games Can Improve Your Well-Being

Dumb Little Man

Have you ever heard that you need to exercise your mind as well as your body? Play is an important part of human development, but adults are notoriously bad at making time for it. Finding time to relax is important to our health and even our sanity. Lucky for us, board games have been shown to reduce stress and have a myriad of unexpected benefits. Some board games, like Nine Men’s Morris, are so old that experts aren’t even sure where or when people started playing them.

The Deliberate Task List: Controlling What I Do

Simple Productivity Blog

One of the things from Getting Things Done that doesn’t work for me is the long lists of tasks split into contexts. It encourages me to take on too much for a current day. If I put my tasks on my calendar, I would see that there aren’t enough hours, but this requires an accuracy in estimating tasks that even after years of practice I don’t posses.

16 Great Reasons to Meditate That’ll Convince You to Start Now

Dumb Little Man

Not only the monks or the devotees of Lord Shiva meditate. You don’t have to belong to a specific religion nor convert into an ascetic to meditate. There are many definitions of meditation by distinct people, but I feel this is where we are wrong. We cannot define meditation because it’s a different experience for every individual. And so, we should not compare those experiences.

Why We Aren't Doing a Coworking Forecast This Year

This is the time of year we normally release our annual coworking forecast. We’re still going to be researching coworking. We’re just no longer going to do an annual space and membership forecast.

Things Assistants Do That Executives Appreciate

I am very fortunate in that I get to read fabulous letters from executives touting the behavior changes they see in their executive or administrative assistants after attending our Star Achievement Series® course. Recently I have read more than 40 executive letters.
