The Secret to Motivation

Eat Your Career

I’m currently listening to the book, “The Motivation Myth” by Jeff Haden. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s been incredibly motivating! I’m only about halfway through and, already, I can confidently say it’s one of the best books I’ve read on the topic of goal achievement. If you’ve set some lofty goals this year (whether personal or professional) and you’re struggling to make headway, consider this book a “must read.”.

Blatant Pronoun Misuses You Want to Learn and Avoid

Office Dynamics

by Barbara McNichol. I love watching the TV show “Dancing with the Stars” but even this escape doesn’t give me a break from grammar glitches. In one episode alone, I counted four times when participants and/or hosts misused the pronouns as they spoke. As a society, if we repeatedly hear words used incorrectly on national TV (and all around us), how will we ever know what’s right?

Will Smart Circuit Breakers Monitor the Grid of the Future?

Eco-Office Gals

Many technologies in the energy sector are now getting modernized with “smart” and connected functionality that enables them to be both more efficient and more aware. Take the average electronic device, for instance, that employs ENERGY STAR® and similar certified ratings. Even though they aren’t directly a part of the energy market, they do have an impact on the overall power grid.

The Post Millennial Generation

Small Business Labs

A fun demography fact is there aren't official definitions of generational cohorts*.    Making this even more fun, different people and groups often use different definitions and even different names for the various cohorts. For example, the generation born between roughly 1980 and 2000 used to be called "Gen Y" (and still is by many). But that name fell out of favor a few years ago. Instead, "Millennials" is now the commonly used term for this generation.

Betting on the Lottery: Is There a Strategy?

Dumb Little Man

Lotteries are among the world’s most favorite gambling pastimes, with hundreds of people made much richer because of them. So there’s no wonder lottery ticket sales are huge when there’s a massive jackpot on the line. With state and national lotteries all completely checked by third-party audits, people play knowing that the results of each draw are completely fair and random; and yet people still manage to concoct strategies for playing the lottery.

It’s Time To Find Your Unconventional Workout

I grew up a thin waif of a blond child. A hamburger or two would have done me some good but luckily, I was raised in a family of vegetarians- mindful and meditative vegetarians (read: no hamburgers). I did not work out or go out for “the team.”.

Everyday Leadership in Action

Eat Your Career

The word “leadership” is often misunderstood in the workplace. Most people think it requires a title of some sort. You’re a leader if you supervise others or if you have a few fancy letters after your name. I don’t think leaders are defined by position or organizational hierarchy. To me, leaders are defined by their actions. Consequently, I believe that anyone in any role has the ability to be a leader.

Ikigai: The Japanese Secret To A Happy Life

The pressure to find happiness can lead to a sense of inadequacy and disappointment. In fact, the pressure to be happy can make you unhappy. Instead of forcing yourself, try Ikigai. It can get you out of bed in the morning. In the culture of Okinawa, Japan, Ikigai (pronounced “eye-ka-guy”) roughly translates to “reason for being.”. In a 7-year study involving about 43,000 adults, it was found that those adults who were able to find their Ikigai were alive 7 years after the study.

Setting Healthy Boundaries. I was teaching a class two weeks ago from the Star Achievement Series®. Our theme for that day was the attitude component of Star Achievement. Of course, we had plenty to talk about and one tip an attendee mentioned was, “setting healthy boundaries.”

12 Important Life Lessons I Learned The Hard Way

Dumb Little Man

It’s been a long journey for me to realize what life is about and how to be happy. After surviving a physically and emotionally abusive stepfather, I became a rebellious teenager. I took things to the extreme. I was deeply involved in drugs and the wrong group of friends. As a result, it took me 6 years to graduate from college. I was arrested more times than I can count and spent time in drug rehab. Eventually, I managed to graduate. After that, I studied law and passed the bar.

A "Smelly" Career Problem

On The Job

Today is National Fragrance Day, which may mean diddly squat to you. Except if you're at work, and someone has decided to microwave last night's leftover shrimp scampi. Or, loaded on the Paco Rabanne cologne. Someone else decides to burn a wintergreen candle on their desk. It's not that there is anything wrong with any of these scents, but they can become a problem in the workplace where not everyone shares your love of Dragon Noir perfume or the smell of popcorn at 8 a.m.

Great Assistants Are In the Know

Great assistants know. It’s COOL to be an administrative professional because you are privy to information that other employees are not or you may be given a heads up on an upcoming change before other employees are told. When I think back to some of the executives I worked with as a strategic business partner, there were numerous occasions when they would share important information with me. That made me feel trustworthy and like a confidante.
