Alright, well, I know he emailed me to let me know I had a broken link in a post. And I know he was interested in what that link led to, which made me think well of him, so I emailed him back. In less than 5 emails, in fact. This is perhaps my most important rule of thumb, whether writing books, blog posts, or emails.

The process feels herky jerky, and I don’t get that surge of feeling right before I hit publish. It’s a process that takes time to work through and eventually the hope is we’re the better for it. I maximize those as much as I can, and when they strike, I get myself to a keyboard. Just remembering who I was.

Sure, it’s great to hit the snooze button and give yourself an extra hour of R&R once in awhile, but before you know it, you’re getting up at noon and puttering around before you answer your customer emails. Your mind isn’t a computer, and treating it like it can process data endlessly is a great way to ensure brain drain.

I find it really slows down the process and I have the Check Grammar While You Type on so feel that is enough.

Now, when I say ‘don’t write’, I don’t mean you should take a break or get away from the keyboard for a day. It’s called sub-vocalization, which is a natural brain process we use while we read. I’m a pretty fast typist but it made me realise how unnatural it is to use a keyboard, or even a pen.

And then your only task will be to keep it that way, so that you never have to go through that crazy process of starting from scratch again. It would be much easier to keyboard it but I know it wouldn’t have the same effect as writing it by hand. I do feel much more comfortable with a keyboard than hand though.

Although it’s been more than 7 months since I’ve published it, I still get a few re-tweets per week and a decent number of monthly thank you emails. After I finish, I send the generated mind map as an email attachment. For that, I’m using Quicksilver, the MacJournal shortcut and self-addressed emails. That’s all.

I’m working on a novel, and the drafting and redrafting process means frequently revisiting material I wrote upwards of twelve months ago. This is where bloggers get a head start: if you have a blog, you have a good reason to put fingers to keyboard on a regular basis. Something similar has happened with my fiction writing.

I’d argue that the mere process of getting degree, of getting educated, is an important one and teaches you how to think. Sonya – I do have to admit that most people who email me their resume and quote an English degree tend to have some of the worst writing in the world… Not sure why that is, actually. Wish I knew.
