The Yellowstone bears had been trained to rely on us. Given this success, the US Fish & Wildlife Service proposed delisting the grizzlies for the first time in late 2005. And when we cut them off, their population tanked. Bear numbers swelled, and by the mid-2000s, more than 600 bears roamed the Yellowstone area.
