You have to learn a whole new way of doing things, from how to log onto the computer to filling out a purchase order form. Even though they can seem like small things, at the beginning you are trying to do your best to impress and can feel a bit helpless when the phone rings and you realize you don't know how to answer it.

Learn to divvy up the space. With offices at home, we’ve become more addicted to work and the constant e-mails and phone calls. Learn to "parent" yourself and put limits on when and how you will work at home. Have a “dump” zone. For example, you can use files labeled with the months of the year.

If your employee or employees are sitting at their computers all day, making and taking phone calls, working on documents, data input and other tasks that are computer based with little to no public interaction in person they are a good candidate for either choice. I learned this first hand when I spent some time with Karen Hanrahan this past month. This in the long term, saves you on medical costs and down-time. When purchasing new equipment, pay attention to the energy rating. That means that your dollar goes much farther when you consume these products.

I was taken on a tour of the premises and they pointed out the office equipment I would need to use and introduced me to everyone we met. Be kind to your new hires and available to answer their questions and help them learn the ropes. I basically know how to answer the phones and take messages. Thanks for a great article.

Get knowledgeable on how to work the various office equipment. I can honestly say that even though it was a hard time to go through, I ended up getting a much better job and a better opportunity and can look back on it as a good learning experience. My former boss gave me an excellent reference on paper and by phone.
