In recent Office of the Future research from OfficeTeam and the International Association of AdministrativeProfessionals, 50 percent of survey respondents feel they have skills that are not being tapped at work. Unfortunately, burnout is real, it’s draining, emotional, stressful and typically affects both professional and personal lives. More and more, administrativeprofessionals are asking my opinion on having a certification. I have seen young people in the profession who are smart, bright and great administrative or personal executive assistants who are very successful. What can I do with an administrative certification?
Professional and personal development are keys to keeping one of the largest workforce teams educated and invested in not only their own growth, but the growth and success of the company and field they have chosen to share their knowledge with. Time to read and share professional blogs, articles, books, and webinars (most are free!).
One thing I hear Joan encourage during conferences, webinars, and one on one conversations is to be courageous. To borrow a quote from Joan’s Greatest Administrative Secrets Revealed book – “Success is about expanding yourself where you are currently planted.”. I am so glad I did though!
Training events, workshops, and webinars abound! Plus, professional associations look amazing on your resume! Refresh your administrative brand. Whether you know it or not, you have an administrative brand. Take another look at your resume. Does it accurately reflect your administrative brand?
A possible response could be – I will utilize any downtime researching professional development opportunities such as free or low-cost webinars, training, conferences, etc. BUT – Prepare an answer if asked about possible boredom. I will also develop a desk manual and evaluate best practices for policies and adjust as necessary.
Over the past few months, I’ve talked about this concept at length in numerous webinars, speeches and presentations. Take for example an administrativeprofessional whose role it is to purchase office supplies. Imagine a resume full of value-add accomplishments like this.
Make sure your resume is up to scratch: Your resume should list your skills, your experience in working as a virtual assistant, and any other capabilities that you think potential employers are looking for. Polish up the ol resume It is all right to send your resume out and see what kind of response you get. In this new age of not doing anything more than a quick spell check on documents, make sure you do not have any spelling mistakes in your resume.
