I recently received an email from Joan in her trademark professional encouraging style. I realize many of you received this email and maybe additional emails celebrating AdministrativeProfessionals Day and our profession. Please enjoy AdministrativeProfessionals Day.
I have shared several discussions about this topic with my peers throughout my years as an administrativeprofessional. Stating facts about your performance is a form of professionalism and confidence. Focusing on providing exceptional service at work can be a struggle especially if you are not feeling appreciated.

As I was doing research for other articles on this blog I came across the International Association of AdministrativeProfessionals' website ("IAAP") and was reminded of the advantages of being part of a professional organization. I went to their dinner meetings and conferences and felt it was a good investment.
And Google has become the new resume. A few ideas: Attend industry conferences. Volunteer to lead the next sales or team meeting to share that really cool idea you learned from the last book you read or the last industry conference you attended. Speak at the next conference. Not only are you improving your skills and adding to your resume, you are making yourself more indispensable and an asset to your company or the next one. So you can’t attend every workshop or seminar, surf the internet, there are many FREE programs available online at sites like HP Learning Center and Microsoft.
Networking at a conference does little good if you never speak with the person after the event. If you meet someone at an Administrative Assistant conference, for example, make sure to follow up with that contact within a week or two after the event. If you discussed a need at the conference, be sure to address it.

In this new age of not doing anything more than a quick spell check on documents, make sure you do not have any spelling mistakes in your resume. Job satisfaction is important. If a conference comes up and they are looking for someone to do the registration, we can step in and do that or we can organize it from start to finish. I have noticed in my role as an assistant that I can be called upon to do a lot of things. Our job is not just one thing, but many different tasks and it changes every day. 5, 2010 at 12 p.m.

I recently met with another administrative assistant and as we were discussing an upcoming admin conference, we started to talk about our role and how we are the do-all and go-to position in our offices. There are 12 step programs for many groups designed to help people, so why not for us. How do we keep it all together?
