You could try cold-calling (or cold-emailing), knocking on doors or praying to the freelancing fairies for some work, but there are some better techniques you can use that will be sure to get you clients in a hurry. Second, it looks good to have a couple good causes on your resume. It doesn’t have to be a big thing.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of emailing off four, five, or more guest posts quickly and then expecting to see your work on the blog of your choice the very next day. If in doubt, a polite email to the site owner may be in order. It’s perfectly acceptable to email your contact and ask about the status of your post.

One friend refers you to someone who only has an email address, a generic address like annepottertherapist@mail.com. Would you search online for Anne Potter before writing her an email? Compounding the problem was the president giving me an @comcast.net email address. They’re all small business owners.

What REALLY maddens me are my 20-something fellow karate dojo colleagues – they’re looking for jobs but tell them to put up a personal resume website to highlight their skills, and they react like a deer in the headlights. Many freelancers don’t have to send their resumes to people anymore, so those degrees don’t see a lot of action, but they’re there, collecting dust on our walls. Like, say, emailing us to ask if this is the right email to email us at, when the email you should use to apply is written on the job ad. When the job ad says email us with information and samples, don’t tweet us and say, “Just click here.&# Someone wrote an email to “Mr. Bangamon.&#
