For example, don’t lower yourself to participate in office gossip. She advised us not to copy being someone else (that isn’t the point!)

So, if the boss does something really great for you (pays for you to attend a great seminar), helps you out (pitches in to help you make a customer happy) or tries his best to be fair and upbeat, then it doesn't hurt to say "thanks." Send an e-mail, or even drop him a personal note if it's something really special.

Find a mentor. Overall, whether it’s gossip from co-workers, violence in the media, pessimism in your own thoughts or other influences, make conscious efforts to reduce your exposure to the negative. Ask questions of mentors and peers. Who knows, that may be the very thing that you need to break out into a brilliant new future.

Ask your boss for opportunities to train in other departments, or to attend seminars or classes at a local university. Find a mentor. Or, you can ask a professional organization about helping you find a mentor who can help guide you through some career issues. Don’t gossip at work. Get more training. Take the high road.
