Shapeways is a 3D printing services company and retailer. Designers upload computer drawings and specs of products to Shapeways and they make them using their 3D printers. They also have an online store where consumers can buy the finished goods.
Shapeways recently announced they raised $5 million in venture funding from Union Ventures and Index Ventures and they are moving their headquarters from The Netherlands to New York City.
Shapeways and their move to NY illustrates several trends:
1. The use of 3D printing in manufacturing continues to grow rapidly. This is part of the broader trends driving the growth of small manufacturing and hobbypreneurs.
2. The U.S. is still an attractive place to locate tech oriented companies. No doubt Union Square Ventures had a say in moving the company to NY, but several VC firms regularly move their portfolio company HQs to the U.S.
They do us because the U.S. is often the largest target market, technical talent is available and U.S. consumers and corporations are more willing to buy new, innovative products.
Success is not important, the important thing is hard work.Do you think so?
