5 Things to Remember When you’re about Give Up

Dumb Little Man

There are times when despite our hard work, optimism and good intentions, we fail to make progress on our goals. All of our efforts seem wasted. We lose hope in our abilities. We become demotivated and angry. In this negative state of mind, we persist with less than enough vigor and enthusiasm, our efforts become half-baked and the result we crave continues to elude us.

Refusing Rush Work Improves Well-Being

Virtual Moxie

Anastasia wrote to ask about charging rush fees. “I I haven't charged it before but just got a new client with whom I feel it would be very appropriate. But I am not sure what's the best way to do it - flat fee, or raising the hourly fee or something else, and what's a reasonable percentage.” Oooo.unfortunately, I don’t actually have an answer to the question you posed because I don’t support VAs doing “rush” work.

Virtual Reality Hype Hits New Highs

Small Business Labs

We too believe virtual reality is going to be big - eventually. But the hype around virtual reality seems to be getting ahead of the actual reality these days. A big driver of the excitement around VR is Facebook's Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. It has gone on pre-sale with a ship date of the end of March. The price is $600, leading some to wonder if this is too high for the product to be successful.

When Putting Yourself First May Be The Least Selfish Thing You Can Do

Dumb Little Man

We’re better to others when we’re at our physical, mental, and emotional best. Ironically, sometimes we’re so busy doing things for others that we forget to take care of ourselves. We may not see the negative effects at first, but before long, we’ll start breaking down like a car that’s skipped a few oil changes. Why This Matters To paint a picture of what can happen if we don’t practice self-care, I’ll share this little confession – it’s about the time when I had an emotional breakdown.

5 Words That Limit Your Career Success

On The Job

There's a lot of things that challenge me in life and in my work. I cannot flip a pancake without making a mess. I get lost in new places -- even with a map. I find it difficult to focus on work when I know the St. Louis Cardinals are playing. That's why it would be easy for me to say: I'm not a good cook. I panic in new places. I can't focus on work. Those are pretty drastic statements when you think about it. With more practice, I can get better at flipping pancakes.

The On-Demand Economy is Not Just Good or Bad

Small Business Labs

We've been getting a lot of feedback on the On-Demand Workforce report Intuit released last week  (we worked with Intuit on this study). Most of it has been positive, a fair amount negative and some of it downright nasty (see the very large comment section in the article  How The On-Demand Economy is Reshaping the 40 Hour Work Week for examples).      Who knew people could get so worked up about a survey?

Sentimental Clutter

Clutter Coach

by In her book Let Go of Clutter , Harriet Schechter writes about how to let go of sentimental clutter. This kind of clutter is stuff with valid emotional attachments, and logic doesn’t play any part in whether you decide to keep it or not. Items that make you feel joyful with the memories they bring back, such as love letters and home movies, you’ll want to keep.

At first, she missed her books and her photo albums, but none of the other stuff. Not a thing. That came as a big surprise. Not only didn’t she miss her houseful of possessions, she actually felt good that it was gone. Relieved. Liberated.

by Holiday travel season is coming up! If you’re going somewhere, use a packing list. It will ease your travel considerably. I use checklists a lot, all kinds of them. They’re very helpful for making sure nothing falls through the cracks, and I get the satisfaction of checking off items as I do them. I put everything on my checklists because I find that the most common things I forget are the ones that seem most obvious (my toothbrush, for example).

Tips for Taming Distractions at Work

Lifehacker yesterday ran a post about “guerilla tactics” people use to get some distraction-free time at work.
