Why I ‘Cheated’ on Headway and What I Learned

Tips From T. Marie

Sometimes even though you are totally sold on a product or service and use it exclusively you start to wonder if something new has come along in the interim and you’re missing out. What if the next great thing has been discovered and you’re so stuck in your ways that you’re missing out. This was kind of how I was feeling about the Headway theme framework for WordPress. I’ve created and worked with Headway exclusively for a long time. I’ve been using Headway since it was launched. Headway.

Encouraging U.S. Commerce Report on "Digital Matching Firms"

Small Business Labs

The U.S. Commerce's department report  Digital Matching Firms: A New Definition in the “Sharing Economy” Space  is, in our opinion, a pretty balanced view of sharing/digital matching firms and their growing economic role. The report attempts to accomplish two goals.    First, it tries to provide a new name and definition for the sharing/on-demand/gig economy, or at least part of it.

Breaking the Fast: What I Have Learned Using Intermittent Fasting

Dumb Little Man

Can you keep a secret? I haven’t eaten in 24 hours. And I feel freaking amazing! Now before you go and call the “eat 6 small meals a day” police, let me say this: I feel better physically and mentally than I ever have. I get more high quality work done, don’t worry about what to eat all the time, and have more energy than I have my whole life. I have lost 30lbs in the past couple months using intermittent fasting as one of my tactics.

One Super Useful Skill that No One Teaches in Your 20s

Dumb Little Man

I wished I had known about this super useful skill in my 20s. It would have saved me a lot of time, resources, and head-and-heart aches. It would have propelled me faster to millionairedom and punditry. Yeah, no one ever taught me about this one super special skill. Not a parent, not a mentor, not a spouse, not a lover, not a teacher, not a professor, and not a friend. I learned the hard way through failures, rejections, and tons of head-and-heart aches.

The First Thing to Tackle After a Vacation

On The Job

In my previous post, I wrote about the importance of spending some time thinking (while on vacation) about whether you're in the right job or right career. Maybe after some soul-searching you've decided you like the job or the career is just fine -- but you do wish you could make some minor adjustments. Perhaps you realize that you hate working late almost every day so that you miss playing ball with your kids in the yard or having a nice dinner out with friends.

How to Stop Dreaming and Start Acting Right Away

Dumb Little Man

If you’ve been dreaming dreams too long, it’s time to stop and learn how to take action. Do you ever find yourself staring off into space, envisioning your potential success? While the fantasy may give you something to hope for, it will only remain in your brain unless you’re committed to taking action. Aspiring to accomplish your dreams is merely the first step of a journey that lasts thousands of miles.

Is Profanity In The Office Tolerable or Terror?

Office Dynamics

This month our question from our friends at Business Management Daily. Question: “I am an administrative assistant at a very large company and my cubicle is right outside the door of one of the directors. He happens to loudly use a particular common curse word whenever he’s frustrated. I cringe every time I sense it coming. In most cases I try to scurry away from my desk so I don’t have to hear it, but sometimes I do get caught off guard.

The Work You Absolutely Must Do While on Vacation

On The Job

Vacation season is upon us, and for many people that means heading to the beach for a week or just taking a few days to sit around home and try to chill. The problem is that many of us have forgotten the point of a vacation. It's to relax. Say it with me now: RELAX. But as long as we have our phones or laptops with us, that's not likely to happen. We're going to check email (even though we posted an "on vacation" auto response) and we're likely to keep up with happenings in the office.

ICYMI, in Case You Missed It

Daily Writing Tips

Apparently, I missed it: Ten years ago, the initialism ICYMI entered the social media lexicon by way of Twitter. Like BTW, IMO, IIRC, and others, it’s employed as an entrée to a discussion; ICYMI signals to you that the writer is going to provide context by referring to something you may not have read or heard about before. But I wasn’t aware of the initialism itself until I recently stumbled across it in an online article.

Recently, I posted a blog without following my normal procedure of sitting on it for 24 hours and re-reading what I’ve wrote, or sending it to one of my friends to proofread. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Words Containing “-rupt”

Daily Writing Tips

One of the latest business buzzwords is disruption , referring to how technology-centered businesses are operating differently than their traditional counterparts, as when Lyft and Uber compete with taxi companies or Airbnb cuts into the lodging business (and the rental market). The metaphor of breaking away is apt, as disrupt , like any word with the root -rupt , has something to do with breaking or breaking out, because that syllable stems from the Latin verb rumpere , meaning “break.”

“Medium” and Its Large and Small Relatives

Daily Writing Tips

Medium is taken directly from Latin, where, stemming from the adjective medius , it meant “middle,” “center,” or “interval.” It preserves that meaning but also acquired the sense of “intermediate agent” or “communication channel.”. The primary connotation is now of a substance through which something else moves, whether in a scientific context or in terms of the form in which art is conveyed or content is delivered.

Misuse of “Comic Relief”

Daily Writing Tips

There’s a goldendoodle, an Australian shepherd, a standard poodle, and now Ross’s two Persians and another cat.

Belie and Betray

Daily Writing Tips

A reader asks for a discussion of these two words: I get confused when using “belie” and “betray.” ” Sometimes they seem to mean the same thing. Would you please explain when each word should be used, and why. The OED cites two verbs spelled belie that were in use as early as 1000 CE. One belie meant, “to lie around or encompass.” It was used literally to describe a spatial connection. For example, an army “belied by the enemy” was surrounded by the enemy.
