100 Ways To Live A Better Life – 35. Manage Your Time Like You Manage Your Money

Have you ever thought about managing your time the same way you manage your money? Just give it a try. See where you spend most of your time, what the return of investment is and how rich are you in time.

For instance, you would never spend money on things you don’t really like, right? So why spending your time in a job you don’t like? Or with people you don’t like. It’s a bad investment, you wouldn’t do it with money so why doing it with your time?

Subsequently, you wouldn’t spend money you don’t have, right? Sinking in debt is equivalent with working extra hours: you don’t really have that time, you’re borrowing it from your family or friends.

Time is money, they say, but nobody seem to actually treat their time the same way they treat their money.

The Utterly Short And Time Aware Guide To Manage Your Money

Money is a form of energy. It’s not good, it’s not bad. It’s neutral, in and by itself. It becomes good or bad after you turn it into something else, after you buy something with it.

Most of the time, we buy stuff with money. Stuff that, inevitably, degenerates, or becomes obsolete or simply breaks off and it’s not useful anymore. Sometimes, we buy experiences. That’s a class higher from buying stuff.

What we cannot buy with money is time.

They say time is the only democratic resource on earth: everybody has equal access to it. One hour passes in exactly 60 minutes for the poorest and for the richest guy as well.

And now, after these short, and utterly incomplete definitions, let’s see what it would mean to manage your money the same way you manage your time.

First of all, you wouldn’t invest your money into something that wouldn’t give you satisfaction. You would not go to the grocery and ask politely: “I would like 2 kilos of boredom and 4 ounces of anger. To go, please.”. You wouldn’t do that.

So, why you would do this with your time? Why would you spend your time doing boring stuff over and over, or being angry or furious or sad. If you really start to look at your time like an investment, then you will never ever make a stupid placement with it. You will never get furious, not because you don’t feel entitled to anger, but because you know it’s a waste of money.

Second, let’s think about all the time you spend working extra hours. Doesn’t matter if you work for a boss or for yourself. It’s the word “extra” that is important here. Working extra hours is equivalent with borrowing money from the bank. At some point, you will have to pay for that time, with interest. Eventually, you will spend way more than you intended to.

There is only one difference between money and time, and that goes in favor of time. As opposed to money, time is not renewable. You can’t have more once you used what you got.

This second will not be revived, it cannot be re-created, just like a ten dollar bill you lost in the subway.

So, make it count.
