Turn Your LinkedIn Profile Into A High Powered Lead Magnet

LinkedIn is one of the most powerful free tools on the web. It’s a great way to network, get noticed, and meet new people. But it’s only as good as its profile. You can’t update your profile unless you know how to use it right. And you need to know a few things before you begin. The first thing you need to do is set yourself apart from everyone else, no-brainer right. I mean, everyone has a LinkedIn profile. They’re all there, but yours needs to stand out. 

People are searching for you. When they find you, they’ll think about you. And they’ll think about the things they can do to make their life better. And they’ll act on that thought, and that’s how you build a successful business. You need to become the authority for everything you do. People are spending lots of money trying to do things like Adwords or Facebook advertising. But what they’re missing is the one thing that works on LinkedIn a stand-out profile.

I bet this sounds familiar. You’ve recently taken the time to put together a LinkedIn Profile that showcases everything about you, from your experience, expertise, and credibility. However, you still aren’t getting the results you want. Let’s look at how to fix that. 

Spruce Up Your Profile Aesthetic

I’m a strong proponent of squeezing every bit of potential from a platform to have it work for my business. A well-presented LinkedIn profile with a well-curated, relevant headshot can mean the difference between landing a client, getting a referral, or losing a client. You have a ton of space to work with, and you can optimize that space for maximum impact.

There are several ways to add flair. This is one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received–it’s what I call optimizing your “profile aesthetic”–as you aren’t adding SEO keywords but are tailoring the look of your profile to your target audience. You’ll want to include your profile photo, upgrade your cover photo, and use boldface and italics to highlight your most important keywords. 

Your profile’s “curb appeal” is about two things: the profile photo and the cover photo. Focus on these two features to improve your profile’s overall appearance.

Tip #1: Your profile picture should help your profile stand out from the crowd by making you look more professional and by helping you make connections with others. You’ll want to find an image that is professional and high-quality; this is something that will highlight your personality and your business. The key is to appeal to the needs of the person you are trying to attract.

Tip #2: There are two main things to consider when adding a cover photo: what to say and where to display it. Your default LinkedIn profile cover photo should be solid, easy to read, and define a tagline that grabs.

Write Compelling Profile Copy

When it comes to using LinkedIn, many of us treat our profiles like resumes. We want to be brief and professional, but at the same time, we want to convey who we are and what we offer, which generally translates to boring… write with your target audience in mind but make it engaging. 

Instead of focusing on where you went to school, what your favorite activities are, and what you do in your free time, think about what you’d like your prospects to be, who you want to work with, and how you can help them—highlight key resources, services and what makes you stand out. You should make it interesting, add pizzazz and write it to appeal to the type of people you want to attract.

Build Out The About Section

The biggest mistake I see people make is utilizing the about section like they do the one on their website. Wrong. This is a prime piece of real estate to showcase your services and do it in a way that’s got some pizzazz. It is a chance to tell your personal brand story. Use the about section to summarize you, your experience, and what you can do for them. Highlight how to reach you, maybe your calendar booking link and key services. Why is working with you worth the investment? 

Jazz Up The Experience Section

The first thing you should do is change your job titles to resonate with your target audience. Don’t inflate just to sound important. Be authentic here. This way, you won’t be sending up red flags that you are exaggerating or misrepresenting yourself. LinkedIn is a great way to show off your best experience; if you had a customer service job 20 years ago, but you are now a high-level success coach, which would you rather display? Remember, you have a few characters to enter your actual job title, but you can add relevant keywords to each job title. 

Fill in the Skills & Endorsements Section

It’s essential to have a lot of endorsements for skills that represent your best talents and offerings. This will help you make more believable statements about your skills and talents, which will support your personal brand and help you to get your next client. Reach out to your connections, request from current and past clients, and forget your colleagues. After all, everyone has a LinkedIn profile. :-)

Complete the Rest of Your Profile

All too often, when my team and I review profiles to give a facelift, we see that the resources and recommendation areas are blank or lackluster. When it comes to online business and selling online, having an accurate, well-populated profile is critical. Fill out all the sections in your profile as completely as possible. It doesn’t matter how many resources are in your profile, as long as they’re relevant to what people are looking for. List top blogs, maybe a link to your freebie, a link to your podcast, etc. You get the idea. The more relevant these are to what people are searching for, the better off you are.

Tip #3: Users with complete profiles are 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn than users who don’t have a profile.
