What are Social Magazines and Flipboard?

Flipboard is the best known of the many new entrants in a space being described as social magazines.  These are applications that allow users to organize, customize and personalize online news and social network feeds. 

Flipboard got a ton of attention at launch.  They were mentioned as a cool new application by several influential technology pundits and the resulting traffic surge crashed their site. 

Like many of the new social magazine creators, Flipboard is an iPad application.  Users input social media feeds and Flipboard turns them into attractive, print-like online magazines.  It is simple to use and organizes information from most any social network or online information feed.

Flipboard has a really good video explaining social magazines and their use and power on their homepage.  It is well worth watching.  Social magazines is a category likely to be very successful over the next few years.

Social magazines and apps undoubtedly have a bright future as a rich source of customizable internet content. I'm going to have to do some more research on Flipboard and other social magazines now. Thanks for the information.
